Garment Center-shopping NY locals even enjoy!

October 20th, 2014

TripAdvisor posted a recent review that we would like to share with potential shoppers! This came from a women who recently moved to New York and attended our Garment Center Wholesale Shopping Tour. Not only are our shopping experiences intended for tourists and visitors, but we also love to host tri-state women and native New Yorkers. Every women enjoys VIP wholesale shopping, try us!

“Garment Center tour Recommended”

“I am a newly transplanted New Yorker, with the goal of doing everything that looks interesting to me before I begin my all consuming new career. I took this shopping tour just this week, with no great intention of buying much but rather for the experience of seeing this part of town and inside of some showroom.. Fortunately or not, I managed to drop some money in 4 of the 6 showrooms. First of all, it’s fun. There were 9 people women and 1 man tagging along in our group. We represented 3 countries and every age, myself being the youngest in the group. Everyone was in such a good mood, that it was enjoyable just spending time with all these strangers, something one never does in their daily life. The showrooms were extremely diverse, clearly chosen to suit diverse groups like ours, and I felt the prices were terrific. Will be recommending to my visiting friends and relatives.”

Garment Center Shopping

A recent, glowing review on our Garment Center Shopping Tour with a personal recognition for one of our guides, Jacque.

“Fun and fashionable!”

Loved this trip: one of the highlights of a week n NYC. Jacque was a bubbly tour guide and knew the showrooms well. It was interesting and informative to see the designer’s rooms and learn a little about the process. Our first stop was the best: what woman doesn’t want a beautiful bag at well under the wholesale cost? Great deals, met some lovely ladies…had a fun time!

Recent Soho & Nolita Shopping Tour Review

Why you should take a Soho & Nolita NYC Shopping Tour with Shop Gotham

Reviewed March 15, 2014 NEW
Good Adventure!
There were only 5 on our tour, which was a really good number for venturing around the Nolita area. We were taken into a variety of boutique shops where no two places were alike. The size of our group also allowed for an “education” in life in Nolita. From shopping to architecture to a special stop at a cupcake shop, this was a great tour!

Fashion Blogs 101

November 23rd, 2012

Shop Gotham tour guides love to meet fashionistas-in-training who come to New York to shop, shop, shop.  Maybe you’re one of them:  the type to spend time digging through magazines for the latest trends, who troll boutiques and vintage stores for unique finds, they type to spend a lot of time creating your personal style.  Frequently our guides are asked to recommend fashion blogs for those who need daily inspiration.  Here are some of our faves:

College Fashionista

This site is exactly what it sounds like:  a go-to spot for fashion-minded guys and girls who want to stand out on campus.  They’ll find plenty of inspiration on this site, which features interviews with fashion insiders and a daily fashionista spotlight.  Perfect for the college student or soon-to-be high school grad.

Style Caster

When they join this website, users are able to share the things they love, sort of like a pinterest for fashion.  This results in a diverse range of styles and lots of opportunities for inspiration.  At Shop Gotham we love to find new things to drool over, and this website provides a minefield of material!

Glitterbuzz Style

This lesser-known blog is run by a fellow NYC gal with an eye for glamor, and we love her.  Featuring a ton of giveaways and tutorials, this young lady has definitely got an eye for fashion, coupled with a healthy dose of street sense.   Glitterbuzz will not only feature the latest trends, but explain explicitly “how to rock” them.  Enjoy!

Metropolitan Pavilion’s Annual Chocolate Show Not To Be Missed!

November 9th, 2012

Chocolate lovers unite!  What’s a little hurricane or a little snow to a chocaholic?!!!

While NYC may cancel its annual marathon, and subway service might not be totally back to normal, that’s no reason to cancel the annual Chocolate Show, going on this weekend at the Metropolitan Pavilion.  And here at Shop Gotham, we love to shop for anything, including chocolate.  Whet your whistle at any of the Soho area’s chocolatiers, which we visit on our Soho Shopping Tour.  Then catch a cab up town and stuff yourself silly on any of the expo’s delicious delicacies.  It’s a stunning display of chocolate, and a must-see for tourists and natives alike!

Interview with a Fit Model, Continued

November 6th, 2012

Shop Gotham has had the pleasure of speaking with a fit model here in NYC.  A fit model is someone who tries on designer clothes before they hit the stores.  Like every other job, it has its highs and lows.

Shop Gotham (SG): What bugs you most about your job?

Fit Model (FM): What bugs me most about the job might be that everyone assumes I’m dumb because I’m a model. Some people can get a little condescending because of that, and that’s the most infuriating thing in the world to me. Also long fittings- we’re talking 6 to 7 hour fittings- are pretty brutal because you’re just standing there, in four inch heels, for sooooo long. Your feet & body get achy, and if you’re working with a team that doesn’t ask for a lot of input, it gets HELLA boring. But you just have to suck it up, let your mind wander, and think of the dollar signs.

SG: Which brings us to the next question.  What’s the pay scale like?

FM: At my most high-paying account, my take after my fit model agent’s commission is roughly $200.

SG: Per hour?

FM: Yup.

SG: Did you come to New York to be a model?

FM: No, I came here to be an actor.   So for an actor, it’s a godsend of a day job. And for the most part, it’s pretty flexible, usually just a few hours a day.

SG: Is it fairly consistent?

FM: Right now I happen to be in the midst of a solid month of 9-5 work, which is extremely rare for a part-timer, and that amount of hours is really difficult. But I’m going to make a quarter of my last year’s income in a month, and it’s hard to say no to that.

SG: Well, thanks for taking the time out to speak to us.  It’s been very interesting!

Shopping Guide: Online Edition

November 2nd, 2012

With half of New York still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, Shop Gotham has had to cancel this week’s tours.  But we would never let a natural disaster interfere with our ability to shop!  Listed here are three of our favorite online stores to peruse at your pleasure…

1.  One Kings Lane

The name reminds us just slightly of Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane, the fictional home of Jane and Michael Banks.  Mary Poppins would love this home store, which features classic furniture and decor with just a touch of whimsy.  We love the limited-time Tastemaker Tag Sales, featuring discounts on items from the hottest interior designers.  We also love the Vintage and Designer Picks section, filled with “one-of-a-kind pieces that have a story to tell.”  Your story?  “What I Bought During the Hurricane.”

2.  Out of Print Clothing

This clothing line celebrates all things literary by featuring iconic and out of print book covers.   Their T-shirts and accessories will enchant book lovers and romantics alike.   Their items also make for unique gifts– keep in mind that Christmas is just around the corner!   This child’s Charlotte’s Web tee makes us weep just a little bit.  You can also find their line at select boutiques and book stores in various cities.

3.  Etsy.com

To those who know about Etsy, this seems like a no-brainer.  To those who don’t, GET READY!  Etsy is the worldwide web’s ultimate place for buying and selling homemade and vintage items directly from vendors around the world.  There’s something for everyone on Etsy, and the site lends itself to lost hours spent clicking through one darling design after another.   A simple search for “Accessories, women” turned up nearly 35,000 results, including this darling bridal shoe clip for $16.  It’s the perfect way to while away the hours waiting for things to return to normal.  Until then, happy shopping!
