Why You Must Go to Central Park when in NYC

You may live in a lovely city chock full of parks and wonder why bother visiting This park on your precious vacation to New York.

Yes, this expansive 2.5 mile long famous place has a Zoo, Broadway Baseball leagues, lovely restaurants, a carousel and skating rink, running paths galore and a million nooks and crannies to read a book, meditate or take a nap. All good reasons, but that is not the most important one.

We, who have been living in and observing New York and its inhabitants for 3 decades know that if you want to see real New Yorkers, this is the place to go. Our Oasis.

On a Sunday, especially in Spring and Fall, the park is doused with thousands of .. wait for it.. New Yorkers RELAXING! Away from our lightless apartments or stress filled office cubicles, the inhabitants of this city are actually kind and gentle people, who will caress and guide visitors with generosity of spirit as unknown on a Tuesday in Midtown.

Do not come to NYC and miss Central Park. It is worth the visit.

Why Bother Visiting Central Park when in NYC?

You come from a town with its own lovely parks, so you say to yourself, why waste my previous NYC visit on yet another? When I can be taking in Broadway shows, trying out the infinite choices of cuisine, seeing the landmarks I have seen only in the movies and shopping in the greatest shopping mecca in the world?

Because Central Park is worth a visit. 7 miles of respite and eye candy for the local and traveler. It seems as if every inch was choreographed for something wondrous to behold. So grab a camera , a pair of comfortable shoes and picnic blanket and make sure to take a break from the excitement of NYC in a honk-free zone.

New Yorker in NY – A Day in the Life

Commencing today, this Shop Gotham owner and NYC resident of 25 years, will spill the beans on the things to do in NYC, things that locals do and are often not in the guide books . Since all of Shop Gotham’s guests are visitors, be it from as far as Sydney, or as close as NJ (yeah NJ!), its my pleasure to share some insider tidbits to help make your planning and visit complete and worthwhile. Yes, shopping is the feature of our tours, but these “small diaries”, as the form they will be written in, will feature “Other” things to do. As personally “done” by moi.

Friday Morning, May 26, 2011

The Good Morning America Summer Concert series commenced today, with the Empress of Now, Lady Gaga. Concerts take place in Central Park, Fifth Avenue and 72nd Street (Rumsey Playfield also known as Summer Stage) To be in Central Park on a glorious summer morning – well there is not much better for a New Yorker. Away from the madness of Rock Center and the Today Show extravaganzas.  This being the only “ticketed” event for the GMA season and well aware of the madness ensuing, I knew not to expect to actually get into the small concert arena. Concerts commence at 8amish and despite the lines of people who slept outside the park for 2 days, I took my 12 minute stroll to the park at  7:30am with a cup of joe, found a nice patch of grass right outside the gates and enjoyed 4 lady GaGa songs. I did see her arrive “aerialy” – she soared to the stage via a zipline – , other than that  I could not see her perform. But I was enveloped by the  music and felt like I was at any outdoor concert without great viewing seats. Thoroughly enjoyable.

9am.. glorious morning, and Im a bit hungry. So north up the park path I walk, 3 minutes max to the ever lovely Boathouse Cafe, which serves breakfast to go, commencing at 8am.  Plenty of table there to enjoy breakfast and scenery, for which I partook.

Walked home and at desk by 9:45.

The GMA summer concert run from May thru August and with exception of GaGa, they are free. To see schedule, http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/SummerConcert/

Why NYC Rocks, May 2010

Shop Gotham is all about NYC; not just shopping. We share with you more reasons why NYC Rocks

1)Because: At 8:30 am this morning, the phenom country band Sugarland played in Central Park for free as part of the Good Morning America concert series.  New Yorkers not being ardent country music fans, the 150 or so watchers had a near private concert in the most perfect setting imaginable

2)Because Kelsey Grammer can be seen and not bothered while hanging out on Columbus Ave.

3)Because most NYC women still have original unenhanced  “god-given” breasts.

4)Because if you ate out 3x a day 365 days a year, you would still not have covered all of the restaurants here (because 1/2 of those you ate in will have been replaced by another by year’s end)

5)Because today the cast of In the Heights played the cast of Billy Elliot today in teh Broadway Show League

See ya in NY!
