It goes without saying that New York City can be overwhelming. Here at Shop Gotham, we not only want to take you on the best shopping tours in the city, but we also want you to see things that are off the beaten—things only New Yorkers would know. Each month we will bring to you our Top picks of the city; whether they are places to visit, top tips and general advice that will help make your trip to the world’s greatest city, one to remember. Here it goes:

  1. Brandy’s Piano Bar, E 84th Street: An evening at a quaint bar is the perfect follow up to a shopping tour with us! Brandy’s Piano Bar on the Upper East Side is as old as New York but still makes for a fabulous evening of entertainment. Sing out loud with wonderfully talented broadway folks and enjoy a lovely drink while you are there. It certainly keeps the crowds coming! Visit: http://brandyspianobar.com/brandys1
  2. Link phone charging stations: Link have teamed up with the city to bring you very convenient charging stations. No need to worry about making sure your battery is full! You will be ready to Instagram your amazing day in the city in no time once you pitstop at one of these.4-1
  3. Alex Bittar Jewelry Sample Sale: Known for awe-inspiring costume and fine jewelry, be sure to make it down to the Alex Bittar sample sale this week on 20 W 36th St. Thurs-Sun 10am-7pm.

3 More Reasons NYC Rocks

January 21st, 2016

3 More Reasons NYC Rocks

1) Almost All Shops are open on Sunday (exception: upper Madison avenue). We recommend taking our Soho & Nolita shopping tour at noon on Sunday. Wake up late. Take your tour. Follow it by a late leisurely lunch at a charming cafe in Soho or Nolita. Shop some more. Drag your bags home. Take a nap. A perfect sunday.

2)Cover bands at BBKings. Almost any musician you have ever loved is represented at BBkings by a “look-alike band”, who are often as good as the real deal. Typically $15. Civilized environment with food & bev.

3)Philharmonic in Central Park. True that about a zillion other people also show up to picnic under the stars. But there is always a patch of grass to snag and hey, its the NY Philarmonic for free! July 17 2009.

Visiting New York This September

September 9th, 2015

Packing for a trip away, especially for a fashion mecca such as New York City can be a challenge. September has arrived, Fashion Week has literally begun yet Fall is not quite in full swing. Use the final few summer days – perhaps even weeks – to rock an array of pastel and nude looks before the new season well and truly kicks in. When choosing what to wear for a September in New York at any age, you have the opportunity to keep it light and bright.

Here at Shop Gotham we recommend packing a lightweight cream sweater which you can pair with white skinnies and beige flats. For smooth day-to-evening transition, add a nude leather jacket. Make the most of accessorising with a large black tote for days out and we cannot help but love a dark burgundy/vamp lip for the right amount of color. The best thing about keeping it neutral is that you can pack a few extra dark items again for the perfect day-to-evening looks. See our moodboard inspiration courtesy of Polyvore below:

Five Reasons to Love NYC Parks in the Summer!

May 23rd, 2013

New Yorkers earn some serious outdoor time after surviving our long, snowy, wet winters.  So the moment the temperature hits 70, we head to the sidewalk cafes, the waterfront, and especially the parks!  Here are five fantastic reasons to love NYC Parks!

1.  Shakespeare in the Park

From late May to mid August free tickets are available on a first-come, first served basis for these star-studded, only-in-NYC performances.  For once the hottest ticket in town can’t be found on Broadway!  This year the Public Theatre presents Comedy of Errors and a musical version of Love’s Labour’s Lost.  These productions have been known to move to Broadway, so see it this summer (for free) so you can say you saw it first!

2.  Summerstage

City Parks Foundation hosts free concerts in over 750 venues citywide.  But the most popular by far is Summerstage, which brings A-list talent like Adele and the Indigo Girls to Rumsey Playfield, off of West 72nd Street.  These concerts get incredibly crowded, and tickets are almost impossible to get, so check out the Summerstage link and plan your summer accordingly!

3.  HBO Bryant Park Summer Films

The lawn at Bryant Park opens at 5:00 PM, the movies start around 9:00.  Not a space can be found by 6:00 PM, so popular is this NYC summer tradition of free classic movies outdoors.  Pack a picnic, invite good company, and prepare to settle down for a night you won’t forget.  This year’s offerings range from Tootsie to ET.  And it’s all free!

4.  Free Yoga in Bryant Park

Offered twice weekly, this free yoga series provides challenging vinyasa flow to literally hundreds of yogis throughout the City.  For the past ten years, Lululemon Athletica has been sponsoring this event, providing instructors and mats for New Yorkers in need of Zen.  Namaste!

5.  Broadway in Bryant Park

Those reading this blog now see why Bryant Park is quickly becoming the favorite park of the locals!  Every summer Bryant Park hosts hundreds of free events, twice a year they host Fashion Week, and once a year they host a spectacular gift bazaar, complete with a free ice skating rink.  But Broadway in Bryant Park holds a special place for Shop Gotham tour guides, most of whom confess an unadulterated love of musical theatre.  Every Thursday throughout July and August, the most popular Broadway shows perform their biggest hit.  The ONLY way to see Broadway for free!
