Once the domain of grandmothers and craft-fair habitues, the Christmas sweater is cool again. This week the Shop Gotham blog presents three fabulous options for those desperate to don this seasonal classic. All can be found on a Shop Gotham shopping tour, of course!
Top Shop
This British invasion quickly became a fashionista haven when it opened its doors a few years ago. It is still the only Top Shop in New York City, and one of three locations in the United States. Its four floors of dizzying fashion delight tourists on our Shop Gotham Soho/Nolita tour. You can find this adorable snowman sweater there at a VERY reasonable price…
Uniqlo
Uniqlo debuted their collection of Christmas sweaters immediately after Halloween to great acclaim. They have partnered with a Parisian artists’ collective called Andrea Crews to make some truly unique “jumpers,” as the Brits say. Check out www.uniqlo.com for more information… or let us take you to the one on Broadway!
Opening Ceremony
This small boutique defines style in NYC, and guess what they’re featuring this season? You guessed it: the ever-chic Christmas sweater. From this $58 tartan sweater by KTZ to this see-through knit crewneck sweater for $780, Opening Ceremony has something for everyone in just about every price range. But the Howard Street store is hard to find… so let us show you on our Soho/Nolita tour!
Followers of this blog know that Shop Gotham loves a shoe sale. What you may not know is that we drool over just about every pair of Frye boots we happen to come across– which we often do, given that the boots are a staple of New York City boutiques.
However, this year Frye has branched out on their own, opening the very first Frye store on Spring Street in Soho. This flagship store features 15-foot ceilings, exposed brick walls and reclaimed barn doors. Its design has earned it a LEED certification. The boots themselves are every bit as classic and drool-worthy as ever, and if you express a moment’s confusion or hesitation, there is a private-fit specialist on hand to pair you up with your perfect boot. It’s the perfect, practical indulgence for the upcoming winter. We’ll take you there on a Shop Gotham Soho tour today!
With the ever-changing retail landscape of Soho and Nolita, it was time to troll the streets and see what’s new (what’s belly up) and whats wortwhile. Today we went to the Piperlime and Christian Siriano stores, both of which opened in past 3 weeks.
Piperlime: This fresh big store– the only bricks and morter one of this popular on-line company — offers mid range women’s apparel, accessories and footwear. Here you wont find originality, but rather items from Rachel Zoe, Splendid, Olivia Palermo, BCBG and about 12 other designers. A good one-stop shopping excursion in lieu of a visit to Bloomies. The large shoes and boots section has worthwhile offerings in the $150- $300 price point. Overall: good addition to Soho for those who find the area overrun with chains and unaffordable boutiques. Piperlime, 121 Wooster St, between Prince and Spring
Christian Siriano: High hopes dashed with this store.Felt like so many of the individual boutiques (with short lives) in NYC. Designer’s inspiration vs what women want to wear. At first glance, this small store does not even inspire a thorough glance. Dark and drab dresses and separates in the $300 – $600 category. Funny, but the online store feels fresher. Feh. Christian Siriano, 252 Elizabeth Street

Here is how it works:. Shop Gotham provides access to its exclusive partner showrooms all year round. There, our guests can purchase current season apparel at wholesale (at least 50% off what you will see it for in the stores). AND meet a designer or 2! Add to that a hot designer Sample Sale. But Sample Sales have peak seasons and we are about to commence Spring! So if you are ready to drop some dough – albeit alot less than you might otherwise, this is how and where to do it. For more information or to book tickets, please visit: www.shopgotham.com PS: tours max at 12 persons and fill up quickly. Gents, we luv ya, but alas, this is only for women’s apparel and accessories.

As the transition month, March (like Sept) can be tricky. Fur or no fur? light colors yet? hmmm. If you are visiting New York this March, you have undoubtedly done a little research and know that New York has had an unseasonably warm winter . But it is still technically winter, so what lies ahead is unknown. Lets start with Coats: Until mid March, fur collars and capes only. Ditch your full length number; it wont look chic anymore this season. Once we approach April, leave all fur items home. Instead, pack your wool and lined leather coats along with some chic scarves for the evening nip. Apparel: Despite the bright hues of the spring racks, its not quite time to don everything. Dark brights, yes. Pastels, not so much. Happen to own red or midnight blue jeans. Absolutely pack them. Otherwise, jeans and lightweight darker items are just right for this time of year. Footwear: Boots are now a 12 month accessory. However, Uggs and snow boots will not be needed. Suede, leather, high, low, booties.. all good. Pumps and dark colored sandals for nightime activities- absolutely. As always, keep in mind, that New York casual is not the same as run-to-the-mall in some suburbs casual. Ill fitting shorts and bulky sweaters. Please no! Sneakers – the type which should only be seen in the gym – not shopping attire here. Clean, simple chic. You can do it! And if you want some assistance, Shop Gotham shopping tours can be one answer. Please visit us at www.shopgotham.com
As our mild winter continues, do does our low season rates for theGarment Center “insider” shopping tour. But only through February. Wholesale shopping and a discounted program. What are you waiting for?
