Five Reasons to Love NYC Parks in the Summer!

May 23rd, 2013

New Yorkers earn some serious outdoor time after surviving our long, snowy, wet winters.  So the moment the temperature hits 70, we head to the sidewalk cafes, the waterfront, and especially the parks!  Here are five fantastic reasons to love NYC Parks!

1.  Shakespeare in the Park

From late May to mid August free tickets are available on a first-come, first served basis for these star-studded, only-in-NYC performances.  For once the hottest ticket in town can’t be found on Broadway!  This year the Public Theatre presents Comedy of Errors and a musical version of Love’s Labour’s Lost.  These productions have been known to move to Broadway, so see it this summer (for free) so you can say you saw it first!

2.  Summerstage

City Parks Foundation hosts free concerts in over 750 venues citywide.  But the most popular by far is Summerstage, which brings A-list talent like Adele and the Indigo Girls to Rumsey Playfield, off of West 72nd Street.  These concerts get incredibly crowded, and tickets are almost impossible to get, so check out the Summerstage link and plan your summer accordingly!

3.  HBO Bryant Park Summer Films

The lawn at Bryant Park opens at 5:00 PM, the movies start around 9:00.  Not a space can be found by 6:00 PM, so popular is this NYC summer tradition of free classic movies outdoors.  Pack a picnic, invite good company, and prepare to settle down for a night you won’t forget.  This year’s offerings range from Tootsie to ET.  And it’s all free!

4.  Free Yoga in Bryant Park

Offered twice weekly, this free yoga series provides challenging vinyasa flow to literally hundreds of yogis throughout the City.  For the past ten years, Lululemon Athletica has been sponsoring this event, providing instructors and mats for New Yorkers in need of Zen.  Namaste!

5.  Broadway in Bryant Park

Those reading this blog now see why Bryant Park is quickly becoming the favorite park of the locals!  Every summer Bryant Park hosts hundreds of free events, twice a year they host Fashion Week, and once a year they host a spectacular gift bazaar, complete with a free ice skating rink.  But Broadway in Bryant Park holds a special place for Shop Gotham tour guides, most of whom confess an unadulterated love of musical theatre.  Every Thursday throughout July and August, the most popular Broadway shows perform their biggest hit.  The ONLY way to see Broadway for free!

East Coast vs. West Coast Fashion Camps!

Even though the weather outside is frightful, some of you might be thinking about what to on your next vacation– summer vacation, that is.  Listed here are two SG-approved Fashion Camps for budding fashionistas on both sides of the continent.  If you’re from middle America and you know of a great fashion camp near you, be sure to tell us about it!  We’ll post on the blog.

Meanwhile, enjoy!

Fashion Camp NYC

We admit to a slight partiality when it comes to this camp because it takes place here in New York.  But for several weeks each summer, the City throbs with fashion-lovers who get to go behind the scenes of the fashion industry.  With sneak peeks into the showrooms and offices of Juicy, Marc Jacobs, and other big-name designers, this camp offers a teen an experience she’ll not soon forget!  Interested in fashion camp but can’t squeeze it in this summer?  Come take the Shop Gotham Garment Center tour for a preview of the fashion action.

Fashion Camp OC

This West Coast establishment takes the training of its fashionistas seriously!  Offering courses for children as young as seven all the way through to adulthood, Fashion Camp OC teaches all sorts of skills to prepare a person for a career in the industry.  They offer classes in sketching, designing, styling, and fashion shows, among many, many others.  And this isn’t just a summer camp.  They are currently accepting enrollment for classes offered over the winter school break.  So what are you waiting for?

Shop Gotham Hits the Road!

February 5th, 2010

New York City will always be our first love, but here are some stores across America that have knocked us off our Jimmy Choos…

1.  Pangea (Nashville, TN; www.pangeanashville.com)  Located alongside the Vanderbilt University campus, this eclectic shop is a feast for the eye as well as the pocketbook.  Shoppers will find temptation around every corner, from indie-label rompers to kitsch folk art to a variety of naughty cards and buttons.  Expect a sniff or two from one of the store owner’s adorable dogs while killing time in the best way possible.

2.  Candy Baron (Laguna Beach, CA; www.thecandybaron.com)  This sunny beach town is home to a candy store that brings out the kid in all of us.  Check your self-control at the door and indulge in barrel after barrel of classic penny candies that remind you of summer days at camp.    Their selection includes sugar-free, international and hard-to-find concoctions meant to satisfy your sweet tooth for days to come.

3.  Hey Daisy (Appleton, WI; www.heydaisy.com)  This unexpected gem of a boutique breathes life onto East College Avenue in Appleton.  The shopper who ducks into Hey Daisy will find a well-edited selection of jeans, tee shirts and dresses at terrific prices.  The last-minute “impulse” buys located next to the cash register are particularly tempting.

4.  American Rag (Newport Beach, CA; amrag.com) American Rag’s “classidelic” look has a loyal following on the West Coast.   Their vintage-inspired men and womenswear manages to be both timeless and boundary-pushing all at the same time.  Make time for lunch, as their in-store café offers the best salad selection west of Paris.  Then walk out with bags full of head-turning and envy-inspiring fashion.  You won’t regret it.
