Discount B’Way Tix and Free Things to Do!  December NYC 2016

New York’s newest place for cheap Broadway tickets isn’t a place at all.  In fact, you’re probably holding it right now—or at least it’s within easy reach!  That’s right, it’s your cell phone.  The app TodayTix has picked up where TDF left off.  No one wants to stand in long lines in the middle of Times Square, especially when temperatures go south and the snow starts to fall.  Instead, the younger generation downloads the TodayTix app for free!   It lists cheap tickets available that day (hence the term “TODAY” Tix), and on certain shows, for performances in the near future.   TodayTix also offers lottery options for a selection of other productions.   (Note:  only one or two lottery tickets to each show might be available, compared to the hundreds of people who may have entered.  So if you are desperate to see a certain show, you might want to make plans other than the lottery.)

As of Thanksgiving week in New York City,  the Rockette Christmas Spectacular had tickets on sale for $39, and Cirque du Soleil’s  Paramour was on sale for $55, along with a $35 lottery option.  TodayTix subscribers could enter the lottery to see Sutton Foster in Sweet Charity for $35.  Chicago and Cats were listed at $50 and $59, respectively.  Tickets could be purchased for all of these shows throughout the week.  Many, many more shows were available:  School of Rock, Matilda, Fiddler on the Roof, The Cherry Orchard, Kinky Boots, and more.  Some off-Broadway companies are on there as well, such as the dance company Pilobolus, Othello:  the Remix, Sleep No More, and the Keen Company’s Tick, Tick… Boom!

So next time you come to New York, do what the locals do!  Download TodayTix for free, purchase a ticket, and then meet a TodayTix concierge at the theatre.  He or she will be clearly identifiable.  You provide ID, they hand you a ticket, and you go straight to your seat.  It couldn’t be easier!  Don’t pay through the nose for a Broadway show.  And no more standing in line for hours to pay cash at the TDF booth!

Our Top NYC Picks Of The Month

It goes without saying that New York City can be overwhelming. Here at Shop Gotham, we not only want to take you on the best shopping tours in the city, but we also want you to see things that are off the beaten—things only New Yorkers would know. Each month we will bring to you our Top picks of the city; whether they are places to visit, top tips and general advice that will help make your trip to the world’s greatest city, one to remember. Here it goes:

  1. Brandy’s Piano Bar, E 84th Street: An evening at a quaint bar is the perfect follow up to a shopping tour with us! Brandy’s Piano Bar on the Upper East Side is as old as New York but still makes for a fabulous evening of entertainment. Sing out loud with wonderfully talented broadway folks and enjoy a lovely drink while you are there. It certainly keeps the crowds coming! Visit: http://brandyspianobar.com/brandys1
  2. Link phone charging stations: Link have teamed up with the city to bring you very convenient charging stations. No need to worry about making sure your battery is full! You will be ready to Instagram your amazing day in the city in no time once you pitstop at one of these.4-1
  3. Alex Bittar Jewelry Sample Sale: Known for awe-inspiring costume and fine jewelry, be sure to make it down to the Alex Bittar sample sale this week on 20 W 36th St. Thurs-Sun 10am-7pm.
  4. Lace it up! Our favorite spring/summer trend is in full swing. We cannot get enough of lace-up flats—the perfect shoe to wear whilst exploring the city all day and still looking completely stylish. These are a must have! Plan your New York City trip in advance

Plan your New York City trip in advance

Planning ahead when visiting NYC is key. We’re not just talking about a few weeks in advance, but sometimes months or even a year! There are so many amazing events and organizations to see while you are here that it’s best to do your research in advance. Why you ask? So you don’t miss out on amazing events such as the Women in the World Summit, that we attended earlier this week.

Organized by journalist Tina Brown and in its seventh year, this three-day summit introduced several dozen inspiration women who are leaders or doing the kind of important work we should all know about. Shop Gotham was present at this extraordinary event at Lincoln Center and found it to be a must do in NYC.

Speakers included: Ayaan Ali Hirsi, a leader in the voice against the hardship of Islamic Laws on women, Cecile Richards, CEO of Planned Parenthood, Mindy Kaling, the actor and comedian, Meryl Streep, Katie Couric, Thomas Friedman, Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO of AARP, Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, the International Monetary Fund and many others.

If you are planning to come to NYC in 2017, we encourage you to really plan ahead to attend this summit and be prepared to be enlightened and inspired.

3 More Reasons NYC Rocks

3 More Reasons NYC Rocks

1) Almost All Shops are open on Sunday (exception: upper Madison avenue). We recommend taking our Soho & Nolita shopping tour at noon on Sunday. Wake up late. Take your tour. Follow it by a late leisurely lunch at a charming cafe in Soho or Nolita. Shop some more. Drag your bags home. Take a nap. A perfect sunday.

2)Cover bands at BBKings. Almost any musician you have ever loved is represented at BBkings by a “look-alike band”, who are often as good as the real deal. Typically $15. Civilized environment with food & bev.

3)Philharmonic in Central Park. True that about a zillion other people also show up to picnic under the stars. But there is always a patch of grass to snag and hey, its the NY Philarmonic for free! July 17 2009.

Bloomingdales 59th Street NYC Flagship is it’s Own City

To keep a store like the fabulous and mammoth Bloomingdales 59th street flaship operating smoothly and staying current with the times – including new technology –  it takes an army of skilled people.

On a business trade visit yesterday, our guests who were in town from overseas for the NRF show, enjoyed learning some of their secrets. While we really can’t reveal them, here is one mind blowing tidbit: There are 1.4 million light bulbs! Another highlight, when shopping for lingerie, it’s nice to know there is a telephone in each dressing room, preventing the shopper from having to exit in their “unmentionables.”

The Visitor Center is a well known secret but certainly more people can take advantage of this wonderful resource. Located on the Mezzanine level, if offers complimentary coatcheck, docking stations for your cellphones, ipads for checking emails and even a nice sitting area to watch CNN for a few minutes, while plotting your shopping itinerary. And for those visitors from out of the country, make sure to take advantage of your 10% discount!

Bloomingdales, ” Like no other store in the world”, and we agree.

Shop Gotham has programs for a variety of business trade visits to NYC. Reach us at info@shopgotham.com if you would like to explore on behalf of your corporation.
