Here it goes:

  1. Brandy’s Piano Bar, E 84th Street: An evening at a quaint bar is the perfect follow up to a shopping tour with us! Brandy’s Piano Bar on the Upper East Side is as old as New York but still makes for a fabulous evening of entertainment. Sing out loud with wonderfully talented broadway folks and enjoy a lovely drink while you are there. It certainly keeps the crowds coming! Visit: http://brandyspianobar.com/brandys1
  2. Link phone charging stations: Link have teamed up with the city to bring you very convenient charging stations. No need to worry about making sure your battery is full! You will be ready to Instagram your amazing day in the city in no time once you pitstop at one of these.4-1

Plan your New York City trip in advance

Plan your New York City trip in advance

Planning ahead when visiting NYC is key. We’re not just talking about a few weeks in advance, but sometimes months or even a year! There are so many amazing events and organizations to see while you are here that it’s best to do your research in advance. Why you ask? So you don’t miss out on amazing events such as the Women in the World Summit, that we attended earlier this week.

Organized by journalist Tina Brown and in its seventh year, this three-day summit introduced several dozen inspiration women who are leaders or doing the kind of important work we should all know about. Shop Gotham was present at this extraordinary event at Lincoln Center and found it to be a must do in NYC.

Speakers included: Ayaan Ali Hirsi, a leader in the voice against the hardship of Islamic Laws on women, Cecile Richards, CEO of Planned Parenthood, Mindy Kaling, the actor and comedian, Meryl Streep, Katie Couric, Thomas Friedman, Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO of AARP, Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, the International Monetary Fund and many others.

If you are planning to come to NYC in 2017, we encourage you to really plan ahead to attend this summit and be prepared to be enlightened and inspired.

Visiting New York This September

Packing for a trip away, especially for a fashion mecca such as New York City can be a challenge. September has arrived, Fashion Week has literally begun yet Fall is not quite in full swing. Use the final few summer days – perhaps even weeks – to rock an array of pastel and nude looks before the new season well and truly kicks in. When choosing what to wear for a September in New York at any age, you have the opportunity to keep it light and bright.

Here at Shop Gotham we recommend packing a lightweight cream sweater which you can pair with white skinnies and beige flats. For smooth day-to-evening transition, add a nude leather jacket. Make the most of accessorising with a large black tote for days out and we cannot help but love a dark burgundy/vamp lip for the right amount of color. The best thing about keeping it neutral is that you can pack a few extra dark items again for the perfect day-to-evening looks. See our moodboard inspiration courtesy of Polyvore below:

Travel In Style

We’re back for the second interview of our new Guest Blogger Series: Travel in Style – where you can expect top tips for travel from NYC’s most stylish bloggers! This week, we caught up with the ultra stylish Iyesha Cunningham of Salting Light. A well-travelled, trend savvy photographer, Cunningham dabbles in the fashion marketing world while presenting her photography on her own blog in her spare time. Get ready for a New York summer with her top style tips below.

SG: Hi, tell us a little bit about Salting Light?

SL: Salting light is the name of my blog I started right before I started doing some travelling. I used it to show my adventures and post some other projects I am working on. I got the name from this bible verse I really love in Matthew 5:13 which talks about us being the salt and light of the earth, and I love the concept of lighting in my photography so it all meshed together.

SG: What are your Top 5 recommended ‘must have pieces’ right now, for fashionistas preparing to pack for their NYC trip?

SL: I’d say some classic white sneakers, an oversized t-shirt dress, boyfriend jeans, classic denim jacket, and a good tote or leather bag to get you from day to night.

SG: Biggest trend this season?

SL: I am a sucker for all white and overalls.

SG: What is your secret NYC hotspot?

SL: haha. Secret hotspot? I’d say a best kept secret in New York is Inwood in the Fort Tryon Park and Cloisters area, even the path under the George Washington bridge by the lighthouse. It’s such an escape from the NYC madness but a bit out of the way.

Travel In Style

Shop Gotham has long been about providing eager shoppers with ‘Insider’ information – just check out our Garment Center Tours. We wanted to take that one step further for all of our visitors out there, so we are introducing to you *drumroll please* our new Guest Blogger series. We’ve delved deep into the world of fashion to find you New York’s top bloggers who are armed with travel and style advice for you as you plan ahead your trip to the fashion capital of the world. This week we speak to the wonderful Brittni Joy Shalit, a style savvy New Yorker who runs her own fashion company, In All Honesty. She’ll have you ready for your travels in no time!

SG: Hi, tell us a little bit about In All Honesty?

BJS: In All Honesty is a women’s fashion brand derived on having versatile and easy pieces that can be worn a million different ways, dressed up or down – with a slight edge to it. After a few months of having the online shop open, I decided to take it a step further and make In All Honesty a blog as well to help show all the different ways in which the pieces can be worn. An inspiration of sorts. From there the blog kind of took off and I started to add in Personal Style as well.

SG: What are your Top 5 recommended ‘must have pieces’ right now, for fashionistas preparing to pack for their NYC trip?

BJS:

1. Layers – it changes from hot to cold and gets chilly in-between the buildings

2. A cute backpack – whether it be a fjallraven or a vintage designer one you stole for your mom, it’s perfect to run around the city with and works for day to night.

3. Suede. Really into suede skirts, tops, jackets & bags too! REALLY into suede bags. (suede backpack – DUH!)

4. Fashion sweatshirt. My favorite look hands down is an oversized cute sweatshirt with vintage cutoff denim shorts.

5. Comfortable shoes. You will be walking a lot, and if you’re not, you didn’t do NYC justice. Converse hi tops are always my go-to’s, or my black ankle boots.

SG: Biggest trend this season?

BJS: Truthfully this is a tougher question than “tell me about yourself.” I don’t really follow trends, I kind of just think of things I want to wear and then the hunt begins to find them. Some key things I’m looking forward to wearing this summer are: Co-ords, denim cut-offs with sheer tops or bodysuits (one-piece swimsuits work too), sneakers (think stan smith or Converse), flatforms, and leather. ALWAYS leather.

SG: What is your secret NYC hotspot?

BJS: Whether it’s a secret or not, my favorite place that I drag all my friends to is Macondo in the LES. THE best sangria, tacos, and guacamole, EVER.

SG: Best travel advice given?

BJS: Plan your outfits (versatility is key) and pack light, you can always go shopping for what you didn’t bring.

Spring Trends to Shop

Good news to report regarding Spring, sunshine and warm weather- the groundhog spotted his shadow. Predicative of early onset Spring and an end in sight for snow, rain (pure gloom) and cold, which we couldn’t be more grateful for! What we are really looking forward to, however, is new Spring 2015 fashion and trends. Here are a few of our favorite Spring trends to incorporate while shopping and when packing for your visit to NYC in the upcoming months:

  • Sporty Minimalism

  • Fringe and Bohemian

  • High Necklines and Statement Earrings

  • Gingham and “Blooming” Prints

  • 1970’s Nostalgia

  • Exposed Shoulders

What to wear when visiting NYC this January

If you are visiting NYC this month and are wondering what to pack-keep it simple! Trends this winter are easy to wear and simple to pair together, lot’s of solid basic colors and loose silhouettes. Our outfit “go to’s” for spot on chic city fashion that is easy to wear in the city, listed from head to toe:

  • Hats are huge this winter! Whether you prefer a long black beanie, colorful knit hat with a fur pompom (our personal fav), extravagant fur aviator, fedora, felt floppy, etc-this trend will keep you just as cozy as it will chic.
  • Sunglasses-we promise, you will want to shield your precious eyeballs from the whipping winds of NYC.
  • Long, camel colored coat styles. Mirroring a slight “bathrobe effect” coats are oversized and loose hanging.
  • Sweaters are either cropped or long in styles, such as cape styles or old school “sweater dress” looks (just make sure the sweater is not form fitting if it is on the longer side-longer sweaters require movement of ease: slits, zippers, elbow holes, etc!) Soft cashmere & wool blends will be sure to keep you warm and fashionable!
  • Cropped denim-whether the bottoms are rolled or slim fitting and showing a little bit of ankle-these are a must! Slightly high waist (just under belly button) are in; in either leather black, denim black, light faded blue, dark wash or ox blood colors! Pull out your 90’s denim, it’s perfect.
  • With freezing weather on the docket, and the expectation that you must walk everywhere in the city, a solid comfortable boot is a must! Knee, over the knee, calf, ankle-any of the above are a stylish addition to top off your look. Skip the snow boots, we’ve only had 2 snow storms so far, both of which turned to rain and washed away within 24 hours.

Black Friday: What to Pack

Coming to the city this weekend? Trying to plan your outfits but don’t know where to begin? We agree, the weather has been a bit nutty, but by Wednesday temperatures will drop again, drastically, so plan to dress warm! Snow showers are expected for Thanksgiving Day, but if you’ve ever visited New York during winter time, you know the snow never sticks!

You might as well skip the snow boots this weekend and save the room in your suitcase.

Dress in style for your visit to NYC for Thanksgiving weekend and Black Friday. Oversized bathrobe inspired wool jackets, chunky knits, everything GREY, over the knee boots, a wide brim fedora, retro shades..the list goes on and on. These key pieces are in right now and if you can incorporate one or 2 of them into your outfits you will surely fit the part of chic New Yorker this weekend!
